Five warning signs your laptop needs service before it fails completely
Laptops rarely die without warning. These five early signals are the ones we see most often in the workshop — and acting on them usually keeps the repair small.
1. The fan runs constantly, even when idle
A fan that never stops is usually a sign of dust-packed heatsinks or dried-out thermal paste. Left alone, sustained heat shortens the life of the processor and the board itself.
2. The chassis gets uncomfortably hot
Warm is normal under load. Hot to the touch on the palm rest or underneath is not. Overheating is one of the most common causes of unexplained shutdowns.
3. Battery life is dropping fast
If a laptop that used to run for hours now barely manages one, the battery is on its way out. Replacing it early is cheaper and safer than a swollen pack pressing on the trackpad and board.
4. It shuts down or restarts for no reason
Random restarts point to heat, memory faults, power delivery problems or a failing drive. These rarely fix themselves, and ignoring them risks losing files.
5. Windows or macOS starts misbehaving
Blue screens, long freezes, missing drives and strange error messages are early warnings. A clean-up or a proper reinstall at this stage is far cheaper than recovering data later.
Tip: back up your important files monthly, not just when something breaks. It is the single habit that turns a disaster into an inconvenience.
